Knitting with Rowan!

Join Jane Crowfoot and a member of the Rowan design team on this 5 day long workshop in the idyllic setting of Masseria della Zingara in Puglia Italy. The workshop aims to introduce participants to the key principles of knitwear design whilst also sharing some trade secrets and professional tips and techniques along the way.

Participants will be shown how to work from a visual design source to devise a basic knitwear design. They will also be shown how to add design features such as pockets, necklines and embellishments to enhance the design. Tips on colour work, beading, textural knitting and professional finishing will also be encompassed within the workshop programme.

Workshops will be relaxed and informal and participants will be given the opportunity to explore and enjoy the surrounding area. There will be informal knit and chat sessions in the evening which participants can dip in and out of at their will.
Participants will be required to bring along a small kit of equipment which will include design sources, sketch pads, a camera, knitting needles, scissors etc.

12-17 May
Claire Benn & Leslie Morgan - Building a Palette of Cloth

This workshop is for anyone interested in building a palette of cloth destined to be cut up and re-structured.  As such, it is perfect for anyone engaged with quilt-making, stitched textiles and/or collage.

A key aim is to enable students to develop understanding of dyes and achieve gorgeous colour harmonies, including:

  • colour mixing
  • colour relationships
  • brilliant colours and accompanying neutrals
  • warm and cool contrasts
  • light to dark gradations of value/tone
  • over-dyeing of graphic (commercial) prints to achieve high contrast
  • creating texture and organic patterning through the dye-bath

In addition to creating textured and solid colours, students will spend time working with thickened dye paints and discharge paste.  Through screen-printing and mark-making we’ll generate a selection of cloth that is layered with imagery; be that graphic, structural, organic or simply decorative.

Advice and guidance will also be given on how to develop compositional whole cloth as sometimes, specific pieces will demand to remain whole!

15-26 June - Fully Booked: Registration closed
Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada and Michel Garcia - Slow Fiber Studio

Slow Fiber is a term we adapted from the popularized Slow Food movement to articulate similar concerns and philosophies as they apply specifically to cloth, fiber, and the craft of making — from awareness and knowledge to production, tradition, practice and commerce.

The philosophy behind SFS is nothing new. In fact, it’s intrinsic to the very foundation of the World Shibori Network – what we do, who we are, what we protect, ideas we represent. But now, it seems the rest of the world is ready for this value shift. And we’re here to help them!

We are offering two workshop dates  (A) 15-19 June and  (B) 22-26 June

week one : "Silk & Natural Dyeing". Explore thoroughly the secret of silk fiber and the way in which a wide variety of effects and colors can be achieved with natural dyes. Yoshiko will cover selective removal of sericin from silk fabric; mixing different types of fibers and fabrics, from organza to satin to wool to polyester; and applying kaiki shibu (persimmon tannin). Michel will cover varying mordants and effective dye application methods. All methods are gentle to humans and environment Instructors: Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada and Michel Garcia

week two : "Natural Dye Block Printing Provencal + Rice Paste Resist Printing Japonaise" Michel will introduce traditional process of multi-color block printing including natural indigo blue. Yoshiko will cover katazome process; how to design and cut shibugami (persimmon tannin paper) stencil paper; to make rice paste resist (its' like cooking and washes away in plain water); and to combine with natural dyeing on fabric and washi (handmade Asian paper).  In structors: Michel Garcia and Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada

1 week course single room supplement £850 Euro 950

24-29 August
Michael Brennand-Wood - Random Precision - Stitch, 3 Dimensional Line, Structure and Light

The aims of this challenging workshop are to interact spatially with the external landscape and internalized spaces of the Masseria itself. As the title would suggest, it's about duality, the collision of opposites and the documentation of transitory moments through stitch, photography and paperwork. The workshop will focus on the generation of ideas and approaches that could be developed individually at a later date. It's not a technical or prescriptive course. Students need to be open minded and willing to experiment with scale, location and media, in an unfamiliar beautiful environment.

For further information about Michael visit his website http://brennand-wood.com

Perfect for the beginning surface design artist or for more experienced students interested in advanced layering. A supply list will be provided at the time of enrollment.

Jane Dunnewold is the author of Complex Cloth (1996) Improvisational Screen Printing (2003), co-authored Finding Your Own Visual Language (2007) and is currently working on a new surface design volume for Interweave Press, to be released in the spring of 2010. 6-11 October
Tilleke Schwarz - Having fun with a Miniature

Everyone with a love of stitch and fun is welcome to participate. We will enjoy the adventure of designing while working and will make a Miniature in stitch. Tilleke will present several lectures about her own work, inspiration, international textile art, use of colour and her favourite embroidery  technique. We will do small “exercises” in mixed media and collage to get started. We use these fast techniques as it allows you to try out new ideas, even if you do not have a drawing skill. The new ideas can be used in your design of a miniature. The advantage of a miniature is that you can do all or most of it during the leisure hours at the workshop and use it for yourself or as a present or to apply for international miniature competitions. The focus will be on hand embroidery but it is perfectly all right and even faster if you combine the hand stitching with machine stitching. At the venue are several basic sewing machines and one embellisher available for you.
About Tilleke:  My work is a mixture of graphic quality, content and fooling around. The humour in my work is typical for my Jewish background: a mixture of a laugh and a tear. Daily life, cats and folk art are great sources for inspiration. I use mixed media with a focus on embroidery on linen. Tilleke lives and works in The Netherlands, but the workshop will be in the English language. For more info on Tilleke visit her website:www.tillekeschwarz.com

Pauline Burbidge and Charlie Poulson - Time to Draw

Spend a week in the wonderful rural surroundings of the Masseria dell Zingara.

Drawing is at the heart of Pauline & Charlie’s work, so they are delighted to be conducting this week, their second at the Masseria. Most mornings will be spent in and around the Masseria – drawing, mark – making, photographing, making rubbings and stitch drawings – projects designed to feed into your own individual work. One day will be scheduled to explore and draw ‘out and about’ in the locality.

Time to draw, time to work in solitude, time to share and meet others, time to reflect, time to enjoy the local cuisine, time to relax, time to enjoy the surroundings, time to make new friends, time to be creative, time to be excited!
