Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada and Michel Garcia: Slow Fiber Studio
15–26 June
From the 15th to the 26th of June, the Natural Dyes Workshop at Masseria della Zingara was a great moment for me. Yoshiko Wada and I presented various techniques for polychromatic effects on textile. With the resist pastes and Shibori from Yoshiko and block printing from me, we tried to present a wide range of possibilities to the very sympathetic group of participants from all over the world.
From U.S.A, Canada, France, Germany, India, Bangladesh, Hong Kong and various other places, the students came with their own approach to textile art, and with an authentic interest in natural dyes.
On the way from plant to color, the natural environment of Masseria della Zingara also gave to us a good opportunity to include some wild plants in the course, as St John's wort, buckhorn, carob tree, pomegranate, wild cherries, chrysanthemum or wild carrot. These plants were appreciated for the different shades they give on cotton fabric.
The good relations with the kitchen staff also allowed some unusual experiments, as , for example, the use of peaches, peers and onion skins as antioxydant materials, used for natural indigo vats.
So, slow food and slow fiber were united for an interesting complement, with some exercises which may easily be reproduced at home in any place in the world.
I still correspond with some of the participants and the pleasure is increased by the good replies I received from people who started to improve upon what was taught in those intensive two weeks
