The coast

With the Adriatic just 7 kilometres away and the Mediterranean an hours drive in the other direction, you are never far from the coast and it is scarcely surprising that the sea plays such an important role in Puglian life. It would be rare to stay in Puglia without eating in one of the many restaurants right on the edge of the sea  - the seafood, of course, being fresh that very morning.

The choice is yours – restaurants with a global reputation, or simple beach huts offering a simple catch of the day.Yet it is only during August that the coast can be busy and then, only really at weekends. Strict regulations have prohibited coastal developments to leave a very clean, natural environment which can be enjoyed in peace. Puglia offers some of the cleanest beaches in Europe. The coastline is also varied. In the South near Otranto and around the Gargano Peninsula, high cliffs provide a rugged feel with caves, natural inlets and marine grottos.

Just north of Brindisi, one encounters a seemingly endless stretch of deserted sand dunes, wetlands and bird sanctuaries. On the immediate coastline, less than half an hour from the masseria, one can find rocky shores with small, sandy coves and crystal clear water. In places the olive trees grow close to the waters' edge.Yet for those looking for a little more life and plenty of action, there is a particular section of the coast around Capitolo where the beaches are smooth & gentle, and boast modern facilities, a lot of well-equipped lidos and a fine selection of water sports. Whatever your taste, there is the beach for you.
